Africa’s Tech Pioneer Returns with New AI Startup ‘Thunder Code’, Raises $9M in Seed Funding

SUMMARY

  • Expensya co-founders Karim Jouini and Jihed Othmani have launched Thunder Code, a generative AI platform that automates software testing by simulating human behavior. The startup has raised $9 million in seed funding and is currently running pilots across the U.S., Canada, France, and Tunisia, with plans to expand into mobile and API testing by the end of 2025.
AI Funding

Karim Jouini, one of Africa’s most prominent tech entrepreneurs and co-founder of the successful expense management platform Expensya, is back in the spotlight with a new venture “Thunder Code", a generative AI-based software testing platform.

Partnering again with Jihed Othmani, his longtime collaborator from Expensya, the duo has already secured $9 million in seed funding to kickstart the product.

Thunder Code was born out of real-world challenges observed during Karim’s post-acquisition role at Medius, where he noticed inefficiencies in traditional software testing practices. The goal? To reduce the time and manual effort needed for quality assurance by using AI-powered agents that mimic human testers and continuously improve through feedback.

Unlike conventional testing tools that focus heavily on automated code-level checks, Thunder Code is designed to test web applications by understanding user flows and interface behavior, similar to how a real person would interact with the product. This allows the AI to identify bugs and usability issues that often slip past traditional systems.

Key Features of Thunder Code

Natural Language Test Creation: Users can write test cases in plain English, which the AI then transforms into automated tests.

AI Agents: These simulate various user personas, such as accessibility experts or UX specialists, to provide comprehensive testing coverage.

Intelligent Auto-Healing: The platform automatically detects and adjusts to changes in the application, reducing test flakiness.

Cross-Platform Testing: Thunder Code supports testing across different browsers, operating systems, and configurations.

Comprehensive Analytics: Users have access to dashboards that monitor test coverage, execution times, and other key metrics.

Rapid Development and Global Reach

The startup has already developed its minimum viable product and is conducting pilot tests across four countries: the United States, Canada, France, and Tunisia. The current focus is on web testing, but plans are in place to support mobile, desktop, and API testing by the end of 2025.

Thunder Code’s early success is also a signal of Africa’s growing footprint in global tech innovation. This milestone not only reflects the experience of its founders but also the rising confidence of global investors in African-led AI ventures.
